OXS-4 Commercial and Economic Case

Investing in Transfer Evidence

## A commercial case built around uncertainty reduction

A commercial case built around uncertainty reduction

Space nutrition can create decision value before a countermeasure is proven. A company can identify why terrestrial evidence fails to transfer, design the next discriminating experiment, and keep a traceable account of what changed. Gastronaut can make that responsibility part of ORCA’s development program.

This is not a revenue, procurement, return-on-investment, or adoption forecast. The oxidative-stress evidence set contains neither the cost nor market data required for such claims. The narrower proposition can be tested: organizations allocating flight access, research funds, and engineering effort gain decision value when environmental-transfer uncertainty is measured rather than assumed away.

A due-diligence record with measurable parts

Gastronaut reviewed 1,453 unique records, assessed 332, and extracted 205. How those records are classified determines how mature the antioxidant evidence appears.

Seventy-one of 205 records, or 35 percent, changed evidence tier after methods review. Twenty-one records that appeared to concern human spaceflight used simulated environments. Twenty-one study families generated multiple publications. One randomized 60-day bed-rest trial of 20 men accounted for six papers and one registration (Kermorgant et al. 2024). Without these distinctions, the field can appear nearer to flight and more independently replicated than the underlying experiments allow.

Reported benefit frequency also changed by tier. The repaired exact comparison found countermeasure benefit in 31 of 34 T4 simulated-microgravity records and 3 of 12 T3 human ground-analog records, an odds ratio of 31.0 with Fisher exact p = 3.5 x 10^-5 (Gastronaut 2026, GAS-OXS-CORR-2026-01). This association does not establish that evidence tier caused the difference or that any candidate is effective in humans. At the human-flight tier, the review found no randomized nutritional or pharmacological antioxidant trial.

That is a due-diligence conclusion, not a market conclusion. Treating a ground result as flight evidence leaves the transfer liability unmeasured and passes uncertainty forward without naming it.

Four proposed evidence products

Gastronaut’s near-term commercial asset can be a sequence of qualified evidence packages. Each gives a different reason to continue, revise, or stop before further resources are committed.

ORCA remains a ground-stage system at approximately TRL 3 to 4, with no flight or lunar operating history. The packages described here are proposed commercial evidence products, not completed flight services. Confidence is high that transfer uncertainty can be made explicit and lower regarding how much a given campaign will reduce it.

Package 1: can production reproduce the target composition?

The production package would document performance under named environmental conditions, including batch variation, assay performance, crop inputs, harvest timing, and quality criteria. Its deliverable would support a composition claim, not a health claim.

Package 2: what reaches the point of consumption?

The delivery package would trace a target compound through harvest, storage, preparation, serving, and consumption. It would add crew handling, waste, mass, volume, power, and maintenance measures. Across 205 extracted records, the oxidative-stress corpus reported no system-cost data for any countermeasure. A measured operating record would begin to address that evidence gap.

Package 3: does exposure reach and engage the intended pathway?

The biological package would test bioavailability and a prespecified pathway endpoint in a model matched to the intended claim. Delivered dose, pathway engagement, and functional effect would remain separate claims. A null result would still serve the decision, stopping an unproductive route before flight.

Package 4: does the claim survive environmental transfer?

The transfer package would test the claim in an integrated mission environment or a justified approximation. It would identify the assumptions still carrying the claim and define what the result can support. Flight resources would be reserved for questions that ground work cannot answer.

Why an integrated platform changes the diligence

The same antioxidant can produce different results by tissue. BuOE supported retinal outcomes in one mouse flight study yet did not correct muscle outcomes in another. Exposure components can move pathways in opposing directions, and flight responses may differ from simulated unloading (Barravecchia and Angeloni 2022; Braun and Fajardo; Mao et al.; Nikawa et al.).

An integrated measurement platform could keep those distinctions with the product record. If ORCA records plant conditions, composition, processing, consumption, environmental exposure, and biological response under a shared data structure, it can help separate product variability from biological variability and environmental interaction. Gastronaut would not need to own every assay or mission asset. Its role would be to maintain the evidence architecture and chain of custody across partners.

Capital follows evidence transitions

The milestones are evidence events, not calendar promises:

  • Milestone A: target composition reproduced across prespecified batches.
  • Milestone B: target exposure retained through the intended food process.
  • Milestone C: bioavailability and pathway engagement demonstrated with a prespecified assay.
  • Milestone D: tissue-relevant function tested with a comparator and endpoint hierarchy.
  • Milestone E: transfer tested in flight or in an environment justified for the claim.
  • Milestone F: operational burden measured against an alternative.

Each milestone can carry advance, revise, and stop criteria. Capital remains available to hypotheses that continue to earn support. A gate that misses its criteria becomes a documented decision input, preserving both the reason for the choice and the value of what was learned.

The product is a defensible next decision

Gastronaut can define transfer uncertainty, measure it, and make its reduction a company product. NASA gains evidence packages suited to research decisions. Investors gain milestones that show whether technical uncertainty is declining. Research partners gain a common record across biology, food production, and operations.

The opportunity is a governed route from a plausible crop-derived antioxidant mechanism to defensible mission evidence, not a promise of crew protection. At every stage, a customer, investor, or research partner can see why the program is ready to continue, why it requires revision, or why it stops. Responsible capital follows that record, because the next decision is worth more when its evidence remains intact.

Evidence boundary

This report separates established findings, Gastronaut's research synthesis, company assertions, and recommendations. Cited works remain attributed to their authors and publishers. ORCA is a ground-stage system at approximately TRL 3 to 4, with a documented ground operating record, no flight operating history, and no lunar operating history. Statements about ORCA capability are design objectives or proposed work unless a cited source establishes otherwise. Biological efficacy, flight qualification, NASA validation, and procurement remain future determinations.

Gastronaut welcomes a bounded technical exchange on the questions this report raises.
