Crew attention is part of a cultivation service whether a hardware specification records it or not. Time, adherence, error, recovery, food use, and operational continuity give that experience economic meaning. NASA can recognize mission costs without assigning a monetary value to mood. Investors need the same operating evidence before treating scale as a credible proposition. Both decisions begin with human burden and human outcome inside the service boundary.
The literature offers parts of that case but seldom joins them. Gastronaut can place human outcomes and operating burden inside the same demonstration. NASA and investors can then apply different decision rules to one record.
A divided evidence record
Gastronaut’s bounded synthesis retained 553 analysable neurocognitive and behavioral-health studies from 5,382 unique records. It includes 393 human-tier studies. Full-text retrieval did not run, so references to reporting gaps concern the abstract-level corpus.
Seventeen of the 553 records mentioned crew time, mass, volume, power, shelf life, or another system-cost term. EDEN ISS supplies a food-production example. Zeidler and colleagues reported 646 kilograms of edible biomass during the 2018 and 2019 experiment phases. The 2019 phase required 694.5 crew-hours, or 6.31 crew-hours per kilogram, and the on-site operator team used about four times the hours of remote support (Zeidler et al. 2021). The paper measured workload and time, creating an operational baseline without claiming a lunar cost.
Other records measure human outcomes without the corresponding system burden. Li and colleagues reported laboratory changes in cortisol, mood, anxiety, and reaction time after viewing strawberry plants, with a nonsignificant mood trend in a long-duration isolated crew component (Li et al. 2020). Douglas and colleagues associated an enhanced diet with lower cortisol and better cognitive speed, accuracy, and attention in 16 participants across four 45-day analog missions (Douglas et al. 2022). The synthesis did not identify an abstract that paired a psychological benefit with the full operating cost of the intervention. That missing pairing is the business measurement opportunity.
The literature also records a cross-domain mismatch. Shi and colleagues studied 57 astronauts and found that temazepam taken before landing aggravated postflight orthostatic hypotension, while zolpidem did not show the same effect (Shi et al. 2003). A countermeasure directed at sleep produced a cardiovascular consequence. Although the example does not concern cultivation, it shows why a mission or business case needs outcomes beyond the intended benefit.
Confidence is high that crew time and workload can be quantified for greenhouse operations. Confidence is moderate that food and plant exposures can affect selected behavioral outcomes in ground studies. Confidence is low in a net economic estimate because current records do not place benefit and full system cost inside the same boundary.
Define value as a measured service
An ORCA business case can begin with a service unit that NASA can inspect: a quantity of safe edible output delivered with a documented nutrient profile, specified crew interaction, recorded resource use, and known operating continuity. Human experience enters through measured variables rather than promotional language. This lets a mission credit crew value where evidence supports it while retaining crew burden as a visible cost.
The service record can include:
- crew-hours by task and skill level;
- remote-support hours and communication demand;
- automated versus manual interventions;
- adherence to operating and consumption protocols;
- workload, fatigue, acceptability, and task interruption;
- errors, alerts, faults, downtime, and recovery time;
- edible output, consumption, and waste;
- changes in mood, sleep, or cognition when measured under a suitable design;
- mass, volume, power, water, consumables, and spares under a declared mission boundary.
These measures need not collapse into one score. For a lunar sortie, a surface campaign, or a Mars transit, NASA may value risk, crew time, and nutritional service differently. Investors may focus on repeatability, automation, service delivery, and the cost of scaling. Stewardship of the evidence means preserving each input and showing how a conclusion changes when assumptions change.
Stage the commercial claim
ORCA is a ground-stage platform at approximately TRL 3 to 4. Its proposed variable-gravity range and nominal operating point are design objectives, and it has no flight or lunar operating history. Gastronaut’s internal record of 1,042 ground cycles over 18 to 24 months can support task, fault, and repeatability analysis. It does not establish mission economics, reliability, food safety, crew benefit, or return on investment.
Commercial progression can follow the evidence. A complete ground operating record establishes the first gate. Repeatable service delivery within declared labor and resource bounds establishes the next. A crewed analog can then pair operating cost with human and food outcomes. NASA would decide whether the combined record warrants a flight feasibility study. Each gate gives capital a defined uncertainty to evaluate and the mission a defined claim to accept, defer, or reject.
The sequence assigns no financial value to an unverified health effect and does not treat crew time as free when a hardware specification omits it. Both audiences receive the same underlying record and can apply their own decision rules.
A demonstration designed to produce decision value
Gastronaut proposes a ground demonstration designed around uncertainty reduction. Before the cycle, NASA and Gastronaut would define the service boundary, human measures, cost currencies, comparators, acceptance criteria, and stop rules. During the cycle, the system would record production, labor, interaction, faults, recovery, food use, and uncertainty. Research partners would manage behavioral measures and privacy.
The outcome would be a decision model whose inputs point to observed records. It may show where automation adds value, where remote support reduces burden, where a task needs redesign, or where a proposed human benefit remains too uncertain to count. Each finding can guide the next research or investment decision, including a decision to redirect effort before a larger commitment.
Crew time is finite, and crew attention carries responsibilities that no spreadsheet can express. A business case earns confidence when crew hours and claimed benefits share the same measured boundary.
