Five questions the
record has to answer.

The research library is organized by scientific domain. This page groups the same material by the question a reader is trying to answer. Each theme lists three tiers: the business and mission reports, published in full; the research synthesis each report draws on, which is Gastronaut-owned and provided on request, listed here by title and scope; and the commentary that examines a single finding for a general reader. Nothing here asserts a NASA relationship, flight heritage, or established efficacy; the evidence boundaries stated on each document apply equally here.

01

Connecting a harvest to a crew outcome

A crop yields mass. A crew member consumes some fraction of it. Almost no published record connects the two, which leaves nutritional contribution unmeasured. This theme covers the measurement chain from seed lot and environment through intake to a defined health or performance outcome, with crew time and mission resources held separate for comparison.

CRP Crop Production: Frozen Evidence Synthesis
GAS-CRP-SYN-2026-01 · Evidence version 22 Aug. 2026

Identified 217 analysable studies on crop response in altered and partial gravity. Replicate-level sample size was unclear in 175 of those 217, which bounds what the pooled record can support and sets the design requirements for a decision-grade crop investigation.

What a short stay can actually measure

Missions lasting roughly seven to thirty days can inform feasibility, variance, adherence, and instrument performance. They cannot convert an acute association into a countermeasure claim. This theme covers intake, acceptability, workload, microbial safety, sleep, cognition, and ocular and oxidative endpoints, along with the exposure windows each one requires.

The record a food system has to keep

Interpretation depends on provenance. This theme covers the linked data streams that connect crop lot, environment, task, sample, meal, crew response, fault, and disposition, together with the crew time, equipment, and governance those records require. Privacy, workload, and causal-inference boundaries are treated as design constraints rather than afterthoughts.

What a habitat research capability needs

A growth chamber is part of the experiment. Local carbon dioxide, ethylene, airflow, and root-zone oxygen can change the biological result attributed to gravity. This theme covers sealed cultivation, environmental telemetry, sampling and mass determination, containment, resource accounting, local acceleration reference, and atmosphere control.

What an uncrewed precursor could settle first

Crop, microbial, fluid, containment, autonomy, and measurement-system behavior under lunar surface conditions can be observed without crew present. Human ingestion, acceptability, workload, and health outcomes remain matters for crewed studies. This theme covers the evidence gates that can precede accommodation, qualification, safety review, and integration.

Citing a research synthesis

Each synthesis carries a stable identifier in the form GAS-<domain>-SYN-<year>-<sequence> and a dated evidence version. The sequence increments when a new evidence version supersedes the prior one, and a superseded identifier stays valid for any work that already cited it. Where a correction record has been issued against a synthesis, the correction is named in that entry and governs the affected comparison.

Gastronaut welcomes a bounded technical exchange on any theme here. A first exchange can define one measurement question and its acceptance criteria without presuming a partnership, flight opportunity, or result.
